Selecting the Best Piano for You

Picture

Overview: Choosing a piano is an exciting step, whether you’re a beginner, a returning player, or an experienced musician upgrading your instrument. The right piano should inspire you to play while meeting your practical needs. Here are some key points to consider:

1. Decide Between Acoustic and Digital
- Acoustic pianos (upright or grand) offer rich, resonant tone and a true piano feel but require regular tuning and more space.
- Digital pianos are portable, maintenance-free, and often come with headphone jacks and extra features for practice or recording.

2. Consider Your Space and Budget
An upright piano fits better in smaller rooms, while grands need more space and budget. Digital models are often the most affordable option, but high-end acoustics are a long-term investment.

3. Test the Touch and Sound
Play different models and pay attention to key resistance, responsiveness, and tonal quality. Every piano has its own “voice,” so trust your ears and fingers.

4. Look at Brand Reputation and Support
Well-known brands often provide more consistent quality and easier access to tuning, repair, and parts.

5. Think About Long-Term Needs
If you’re serious about advancing, it might be worth buying a higher-quality piano now rather than upgrading later.

Acoustic Pianos Buyers Guide:

Choose the Type
  • Upright Piano: Space-saving, more affordable, and great for homes and small studios.
  • Grand Piano: Superior tonal quality and touch, ideal for serious pianists and performance spaces.
New vs. Used
  • New: Warranty, no hidden issues, and the latest technology in action and tone.
  • Used: More affordable, but requires careful inspection for wear, soundboard cracks, and tuning stability.
Size Matters
  • Larger pianos generally produce a richer, fuller sound.
  • Uprights: 110–135 cm tall.
  • Grands: 150–275 cm long.
Tone and Touch
  • Play several models and listen for tone warmth, clarity, and balance.
  • Check for responsive keys with even resistance across the keyboard.
Construction Quality
  • Solid spruce soundboard.
  • Quality hammers and strings.
  • Stable frame and cabinet build.
  • Good-quality pedals with smooth action.
Budget Guidelines
  • Beginner Upright (€3,000–€6,000): Entry-level models for home use.
  • Intermediate (€6,000–€15,000): Better tone, responsive action, and improved materials.
  • Professional Grand (€15,000+): Concert-level craftsmanship and performance.
Maintenance Considerations
  • Tuning: Twice per year is standard.
  • Humidity Control: Protects wood and tuning stability.
  • Regular Servicing: Extends piano life and performance quality.
Brand Reputation
  • Well-established brands often offer better resale value, parts availability, and service networks.

Final Tip: A piano isn’t just an instrument—it’s a lifelong musical companion. Take your time, test multiple models, and choose the one that inspires you every time you sit down to play.

Digital Piano Buyer’s Guide

Determine Your Purpose
  • Beginner Practice: Look for affordable models with built-in learning tools and headphone output.
  • Live Performance: Choose a stage piano with quality sound libraries, portability, and robust build.
  • Studio Recording: Prioritize models with versatile connectivity (MIDI, USB) and high-quality samples.
Keyboard Action
  • Weighted Keys: Mimic the feel of an acoustic piano; ideal for building proper finger strength.
  • Semi-Weighted Keys: Lighter feel, suitable for general playing and synth work.
  • Graded Hammer Action: Keys feel heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble, just like a real piano.
Sound Quality
  • Sample Quality: Look for multi-layered samples from real acoustic pianos for authentic tone.
  • Polyphony: Higher polyphony (at least 128 notes) ensures smooth performance for complex music.
  • Speakers: Built-in speakers are convenient, but for the best sound, consider external monitors or headphones.
Features to Consider
  • Connectivity: USB/MIDI for connecting to computers, tablets, or recording gear.
  • Voices & Sounds: Extra instrument tones can expand your creativity.
  • Recording Function: Allows you to capture and review your playing.
  • Metronome & Learning Tools: Helpful for practice and timing.
Portability vs. Stability
  • Portable Models: Lighter, compact, and easy to move—great for gigs.
  • Console Models: Heavier, with furniture-style stands for a more traditional look at home.
Budget Guidelines
  • Entry-Level (€200–€600): Suitable for beginners and casual players.
  • Mid-Range (€600–€1,200): Better sound engines, realistic key action, and more features.
  • Professional (€1,200+): Superior sound quality, advanced action, and extensive connectivity.
Test Before You Buy
  • Whenever possible, play the digital piano in-store. Listen for natural tone changes, check how the keys respond, and test important features.

Final Tip: The best digital piano is the one that inspires you to play every day. Balance your budget, needs, and preferences—and choose an instrument you’ll love coming back to.

"Glen is a fantastic teacher and has helped both my children achieve ABRSM certifications (level 1 to 3) in very short time. His teaching techniques for preparation are perfect for achieving these difficult certifications in one shot without stress. We are already onto preparing for the next level!"

"Glen is such an amazing piano teacher! He’s not only super talented and experienced, but also so kind and patient. He really listens to my son, goes at his pace, and makes learning the piano fun. My son always looks forward to his lessons, and it’s amazing to see his progress. We feel so lucky to have found Glen!"

My two kids (11 and 14) and I are students of Mr Glen for 3.5 years. Our skills on Piano have skyrocketed since we joined him. We have started acing different levels of the very prestigious ABRSM certifications thanks to his hard work with us! Mr Glen is an amazing teacher with ~30 years of experience with several renowned accreditations having achieved some of the highest highs in music playing, teaching and using it as a tool for therapy for special needs students. It reflects in the way he adapts his teaching style to a beginner, intermediate or advanced student. Some of his students are 7 years old while some others are aged 50+.

Mr Glen is detailed oriented in all aspects of teaching piano - with equal focus on notes reading, rhythm, finger practice, music history and theory but most importantly having fun (in making songs your own by adding original creative variations). He guides himself by students interests and is always receptive to teaching popular songs of our choice. His own Piano and violin playing skills are par excellence and we get goosebumps every time he gets on these instruments! Its inspiring to watch him play and understand what "good" actually looks like.

In general, Mr Glen is a fantastic human being, very welcoming, caring and flexible. We all enjoy his company and at times hearing anecdotes from his colorful past of a life well lived (not everyone gets to play for the Pope, especially when they are a teenager!) and how "life is a negotiation!". We are honored to have a teacher like him and hope to continue stretching the boundaries of our limits with his support! -
