Alfred's Basic Piano LibraryOverview
Alfred's Basic Piano Library is a widely respected piano method series designed to guide beginners through a structured and engaging learning process. Developed by Willard A. Palmer, Morton Manus, and Amanda Vick Lethco, the series emphasizes position-based reading to promote freedom of movement around the keyboard. The program integrates performance, theory and technique and I supplement the program further with additional repertoire of interest of my students. |
I have used this method extensively for many years with a high degree of success. My students engage very well with this method’s structure and engaging format, learning to play music properly from the beginning.
This method directly aligns with ABRSM (Royal Conservatories UK), the Luxembourgish Conservatoire requirements, and other examination requirements with supplementary syllabus repertoire set out by each respective examination institution (see more information about examinations here).

ABRSM - Associated Board of the British Schools of MusicOnline performance and theory exams offered by the ABRSM, one of the world’s leading music exam boards. The ABRSM offers a comprehensive examination syllabus and core methodology incorporating performance, theory and technique.
I teach this complete methodology and coordinate online examinations (performance and theory) from Luxembourg. The ABRSM examination program aligns with other core methodologies that I apply in my teaching in that it can be used as the core method of learning or as a supplement to other methods. |

Suzuki Violin SchoolOverview:
The Suzuki Violin Method, founded by Shinichi Suzuki in the mid‑20th century, is a renowned approach to musical education often described as the “mother‑tongue” method. Its core philosophy: every child can learn music in the right environment—just as they learn language naturally. I have used this method extensively for young beginners. It is ideal for young beginners because it is highly encouraging and highly visual (“imitative”), making learning enjoyable and considerably more engaging than a typical “conservatory” approach. I combine the Suzuki Violin School methodology with other more academic methodologies that focus more on the academics (theory, technique, reading) to ensure a well rounded education for my students. |

Historical and Cultural Context
Summary
The Suzuki Violin Method isn’t just about playing music—it’s about nurturing a musical mind, building character, and developing listening, memory, and tone from an early age. With its emphasis on family support, community, and loving discipline, it continues to shape countless musicians worldwide.
- Early Start & Listening Immersion: Children often begin between ages 3–6 by listening and imitating musical recordings—much like learning to speak—before reading music.
- Parental Involvement: Parents attend lessons, assist practice sessions, and help create a nurturing musical atmosphere.
- Repetition & Memorization: Students learn pieces by heart, frequently reviewing earlier repertoire alongside new works to solidify technique and musicality.
- Tone Development (“Tonalization”): Focus on producing a rich, beautiful tone—borrowing from vocal training techniques.
- Community & Performance: Group lessons, concerts, and constant exposure to high-level music create a supportive learning ecosystem.
Method Structure & Repertoires
- Ten Violin Volumes starting with Twinkle Variations, progressing to Bach, Mozart concertos, and beyond.
Similar graded systems exist in piano, cello, viola, flute, and other instruments. - Teachers use high-quality recordings to guide students on phrasing, tone, and expression.
Historical and Cultural Context
- Shinichi Suzuki, born 1898 in Japan, was inspired by how children learn language and by mastering violin by ear after hearing Mischa Elman’s recording.
- Suzuki launched Talent Education in post‑war Japan and emphasized moral development through music.
- The method spread internationally with teacher-training institutes and national associations (e.g., in the Americas, Europe, Asia)

The Suzuki Violin Method isn’t just about playing music—it’s about nurturing a musical mind, building character, and developing listening, memory, and tone from an early age. With its emphasis on family support, community, and loving discipline, it continues to shape countless musicians worldwide.
Maia Bang Violin MethodOverview:
The Maia Bang Violin Method is a comprehensive, multi-volume teaching series based on the pedagogy of renowned violin teacher Leopold Auer, carefully preserved and propagated by his disciple, Maia Bang I have used this method extensively for many years with a high degree of success. This method is highly structured, and comprehensive providing an excellent basis for beginner to advanced levels. For young beginners I combine the Maia Bang Violin Method with the Suzuki Violin School methodology in order to have a balance of structured learning of performance, theory, and technique (Maia Bang) and visual “immitive” learning (Suzuki). The Maia Bang Method is a systematic classical method which I use as a baseline for all levels of learning, I find it especially effective for adult students and it creates an excellent formation for exam preparation (Royal Schools of Music, Luxembourg Conservatoire). |
Author & Historical Context
Structure & Curriculum
Teaching Philosophy and Highlights
For Whom?
- Maia Bang (1873–1940) was a Norwegian-American violinist who studied under Auer and later taught in New York; she participated deeply in his pedagogical approach .
- Leopold Auer, a legendary Hungarian violinist and teacher to virtuosos like Heifetz, developed significant technical and musical principles. Maia Bang’s method transmits these principles clearly and faithfully.
Structure & Curriculum
- Seven volumes in total, each focusing on a specific stage of musical development.
- Richly supported with original exercises, technical drills, and musical etudes/duets, all following Auer’s dual emphasis on technique and musical expression.
- Features English and Spanish text, detailed diagrams (e.g., fingerboard, bow hold), and clear guidance beneficial to both students and teachers.
Teaching Philosophy and Highlights
- Technical + Musical Integration: Every exercise balances finger coordination, intonation, and bow control with musical phrasing—mirroring Auer’s holistic approach.
- Clear Guidance: Each lesson includes explanations of finger placement, bow stroke direction, rhythm, and tone production. Teacher–student duets model phrasing and ensemble skills .
- Progressive repetition and review, ensuring mastery before advancing to more complex repertoire.
For Whom?
- Ideal for classical, teacher-guided instruction—well suited for school studios and conservatory preparation. I use this methodology as a baseline for preparation for Conservatory examinations/entry (both Royal Schools of Music UK and Luxembourg Conservatoire).
- Excellent for adult beginners seeking structure, clarity, and a teacher-supported program.
- While not aimed at early childhood like Suzuki, it excels in technique-first, well-illustrated pedagogy.
Palmer-Hughes Accordion MethodThe Palmer-Hughes Accordion Course, created by Willard A. Palmer and Bill Hughes, is a structured, progressive method for teaching piano accordion. First published in the 1950s by Alfred Music, it's still in use today due to its clear, systematic approach.
This program is ideal for:
I have adapted this program for adult students, leveraging the standard method and repertoire but enhancing it with additional theory studies, technical work and extended repertoire.
